MCLEAN, Va. - In the first game between the schools since 2019, Longfellow started the 4th quarter on a 10-4 run to open up a 12-point lead and withstood a furious Cooper rally to hold on for a 58-55 victory.
In a fun, energetic and enthusiastic environment, the Cougars jumped out to a 7-2 advantage, but the Lancers answered and ended the quarter up 9-8. The 2nd quarter was evenly played and Longfellow entered the break up 3.
The Lancers started to separate in the 3rd and seemed to put the game away going up 48-36 with under 4 minutes to go in the game. Cooper, however, responded as they nailed 5 3-pointers and closed to 54-50 with 34 seconds left. Longfellow sealed the deal at the foul line going 6 for 6 to come away with the 58-55 win.
Longfellow improves to 2-0-1 in the series. The inaugural game at Longfellow in 2017 ended in a tie. After a one year hiatus, the Lancers prevailed at the first game played at McLean High School. The game was not played the last two years due to the COVID -19 pandemic.
